State-Specific Information: The State of Maine is comprised of unorganized territory and organized territory. In organized territory, municipalities collect their own taxes. Properties that are foreclosed on are deeded to the municipality, who can then sell the properties.
Depending on the municipality, the properties may be sold at a public auction, or sold by sealed bid; or a property may be sold outright to an abutting property owner, or sold back to the original property owner.
In unorganized territory, the Maine Revenue Services, Property Tax Division is responsible for collecting taxes. Properties that are foreclosed on are deeded to the state, and the Unorganized Territory section of the Property Tax Division conducts sales of these tax acquired properties by sealed bid.

The Property Tax Division administers the annual State Valuation program, administers the property tax for the Unorganized Territory and provides technical support services to assessors, Taxpayers, legislators and other governmental agencies. The Unorganized Territory section is responsible for assessing and collecting property and excise taxes for those parts of Maine with no municipal government.
